Your future is not defined by how motivated you are, but by your daily routines and systems. Here’s how you grow the small way: 1. Start by setting achievable goals, like reading one chapter of a book each day or going for a short walk 2. Practice gratitude by writing down three things you're thankful for every night before bed 3. Engage in daily self-reflection, even if it's just for a few minutes, to assess your thoughts and actions 4. Incorporate small acts of kindness into your daily routine, like holding the door for someone or offering a genuine compliment 5. Learn something new every day, whether it's a fun fact, a new word, or a new skill 6. Prioritise self-care by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and taking breaks when needed 7. Surround yourself with positive influences, whether it's uplifting books, supportive friends, or inspiring podcasts 8. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity and a stepping stone to growth 9. Stay consistent and patient, knowing that small progress over time adds up to significant improvement 10. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, to stay motivated and encouraged along the way.

They see these meetings as investments in people, not project tracking sessions. Great 1:1s focus on these three elements: 1. Support: Create space for authentic conversations about challenges, both professional and personal. When people feel safe discussing real obstacles, you can actually help remove them. As a psychologist, I’ve had the privilege of working with top athletes, actors, and corporate leaders at the peak of their game. And yet—despite the accolades, despite the success—there’s a common thread I see far too often: They believe that the next achievement will finally silence the voice that whispers, “You’re not enough.” But it never does. Why? Because ambition that’s rooted in inadequacy is a bottomless pit. No matter how much you pour in, it never fills. True ambition isn’t about proving your worth. It’s about knowing you already have it. After years of working closely with high performers, I’ve noticed something powerful: The most fulfilled individuals don’t chase worthiness. They operate from it. And they live by three core principles: They chase mastery, not approval: If your goal is to silence self-doubt with success, it will never work. The inner critic doesn't quiet down. It just raises the bar. But when you focus on mastery for its own sake, success stops being a desperate pursuit and starts being a natural result. They practice ruthless self-respect: Not indulgent self-care. Ruthless self-respect. The kind that refuses to let self-criticism run wild. They don't allow themselves to be treated poorly, especially by their own thoughts. They measure progress by their own growth, not by others' success: Comparison is a losing game. There will always be someone ahead, always a new level to chase. But the moment you shift your focus inward—to your evolution and your growth—you take control of the game. Ambition isn't the problem. You don’t need more stuff. You need to want less. Many people believe happiness increases when they accumulate more. That could mean more money, more status, or more possessions. But in behavioral science, we understand satisfaction differently. It turns out that happiness is not simply about what we have. It’s about the relationship between what we have and what we want. The true equation is: Happiness = Haves ÷ Wants. If your wants keep rising faster than your haves, your satisfaction will fall—even if your circumstances improve. Recent data backs this up. In longitudinal research such as the Global Flourishing Study, people who report high life satisfaction consistently exhibit stronger habits of self-regulation and a greater sense of meaning, not necessarily greater material success. Here are two ways to put this strategy into practice: 1. Create a reverse bucket list. Instead of writing down everything you still want to achieve, make a list of things you’ve already done, or consciously decide you no longer need. 2. Audit your desires. One helpful exercise is to list your major goals and ask: Would this still matter to me if no one else knew I achieved it? If the answer is no, it may not be a goal rooted in meaning. In research on midlife satisfaction, those who reoriented their ambition from status to service, especially men, reported higher purpose and deeper relationships over time.

Here’s how to restore your energy (and do better work) in 5 proven steps: Rule 1: Something > nothing Even short breaks matter. Try the 20-20-20 rule: → Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. You’ll reduce fatigue and give your brain a much-needed pause. Micro-breaks add up. Rule 2: Moving > stationary A walk beats a sit. Movement restores energy and improves mood. Just getting up and walking a few minutes can refresh your mind for your next task. Rule 3: Social > solo Breaks with people restore us more than breaks alone even if you’re introverted. Chat with a colleague. Call a friend. Grab coffee with someone you like. Connection is a powerful recharge. Rule 4: Outside > inside Nature boosts energy and creativity. You don’t need to hike a mountain just walk down a street with trees. Studies show even light exposure to green space can reduce stress and elevate performance. Rule 5: Detached > distracted A break isn’t scrolling Instagram. Leave your phone behind. Log off. Step away. Real breaks require real detachment. Let your brain breathe. Early in my legal career, I thought being a great in-house lawyer meant knowing every risk, drafting perfect contracts, and getting deep into the intricacies of law. I was wrong. Because no matter how solid my legal work was, I kept running into the same problems · Contract negotiations dragging on forever. · Business teams looping in legal way too late. · Last-minute fire drills because no one aligned expectations upfront. Then I was fortunate to have started working with fantastic project managers. I understood, that this wasn’t a legal problem. It was a project management problem. Here’s the difference in mindset that every in house counsel should consider: 🔹 Traditional lawyer: “We need to secure ourselves against every risk before moving forward.” 🔹 Legal project manager: “We’ll flag the risks, assess impact and probability, align with stakeholders on how to manage it and keep things moving.” 🔹 Traditional lawyer: “We’ll review the contract and get back to you.” 🔹 Legal project manager: “Here’s what we need from you, our timelines and key stakeholders to involve.” 🔹 Traditional lawyer: "This deadline isn’t realistic." 🔹 Legal project manager: "We’ll prioritize the pieces that are on the critical path, break it down, and hit the most important items first." What I learned (and what I’m still learning): 📌 Define the scope upfront. Without clear scope you will waste a lot of time doing double work. PMs always define scope first. 📌 Stakeholder alignment is everything. Assumptions kill deals. PMs confirm before they act. 📌 Overcommunicate before things go wrong. Check-ins, shared timelines, expectation-setting. It’s not a waste of time. It’s simple, but it saves so much legal chaos. The results? ✅ Contracts move faster. ✅ Fewer legal bottlenecks. ✅ Legal is a partner - not a roadblock. The best in-house lawyers don’t just think like lawyers. They lead like project managers.

For years, I confused ambition with control. I tried to manage the market, the team, the timing, the outcomes. I was exhausted. And the harder I gripped, the less actually moved. Here's how to be ambitious, but lazy: 1. Pour Energy Only Into What You Can Move You can't control the market. You can't control how people respond. You can't control timing. What you CAN control: • Your health • Your work ethic • Your mood • Your mindset • Your experiences That's the list. Everything else is rented space in your head. 2. Drop the Outcome, Own the Input Outcomes are lagging. Inputs are leading. Founders who burn out obsess over results they can't directly touch: • Revenue • Press • Investor decisions • Customer reactions Founders who win quietly obsess over inputs they can: • Reps shipped • Hours of deep work • Conversations had • Systems built Show up for the input. The outcome takes care of itself. 3. Protect Your Energy Like It's Equity Your energy is the only non-renewable resource in your business. Treat it that way: • Sleep before you scroll • Walk before you meet • Eat for clarity, not convenience A clear mind makes better decisions than a tired one with more information. 4. Default to "Not Mine" Most stress isn't yours. You inherited it. The market mood. A team member's bad day. A client's overreaction. Train one phrase: "Is this mine to carry?" If the answer is no, set it down. 5. Shrink Your Decision Surface Most exhaustion isn't from working too hard. It's from deciding too much. Pre-decide what you can: • Same morning routine • Same workout times • Same response to low-priority requests The fewer decisions you make, the better the ones that matter become. 6. Be Lazy About the Wrong Things Lazy isn't a bad word. It's strategic if pointed correctly. Be lazy about: • Meetings without a clear outcome • Tasks you can automate, eliminate, or delegate • Opinions of people not in your arena • Problems that don't compound Save your effort for what compounds. 7. Build the Discipline of Letting Go The most powerful thing a founder can build isn't a product or a team. It's the discipline to pour energy only into what you can move. When you stop trying to control everything, the noise fades. Clarity comes easily. Decisions get faster. Being ambitious isn't about gripping harder. I still remember my first job. I was young, eager, and convinced that working harder and longer than anyone else was the way to stand out. I was wrong. Hard work gets you noticed, but it does not make you indispensable. Over time, I realised something powerful: what organisations truly value cannot be bought. Initiative, ownership, trust- these are earned, not demanded. The turning point for me came when I stopped asking, “What do I need to do today?” and started asking, “What problem can I solve today that no one else is solving?” That small shift changed everything. Being good at your job makes you competent. Being competent keeps you employed. But being indispensable? That’s a different league. It’s about moving from doing tasks to anticipating needs, seeing the gaps before anyone else does, and becoming the person your team can count on when stakes are high. In my journey, I have found that being indispensable is less about doing more and more about being more, more curious, more committed, more consistent. The truth is, every organisation has hundreds of employees. But very few people leave the imprint of reliability, vision, and trust. If you want to move from being just another employee to someone your organisation cannot imagine doing without, start with this: act as though the company were yours. Most people go their *entire* life without reflecting. And before they know it, years have gone by and it's too late to change. The most powerful reflection you can do to avoid this fate: The Monthly Review. Grab a pen, crack open a notebook, and answer these 5 questions: The goal of the monthly review: Block 60 minutes to slowly process the month. It's easy to get caught up in the day to day & lose sight of the bigger picture. And after trying 1000+ reflection questions, I chose each question for a specific reason. Let's start with the first: 1. What were my biggest wins & milestones? These are things that you will look back on with pride & fond memories at the end of the year. • Health wins • Business wins • New relationships • Goals accomplished • Fun memories & events Recapping wins & milestones kicks the review off on a positive note. So often, our focus is on the negative. But this questions helps us celebrate all the things going well! And it also creates a "ledger" of wins from the year. From there, you ask a more important question: --- 2. What were my biggest realizations? I used to call this my "biggest losses." But I reframed this—because something is either a win, or it teaches you about the world. And by constantly collecting these realizations, you are always learning. Most of my realizations are about my: • Health • Beliefs • Business • Lack of skills • Relationships By constantly iterating and distilling these lessons, you will level up month after month after month. From here, you go from looking backward to looking at the present: --- 3. What areas am I most satisfied? Least satisfied? Split the page in 2 columns and brain dump bullet points of everything that comes to mind. The goal here is to identify in the present moment what's working and what's not working. From there, you ask another question: --- 4. Based on these areas, what am I going to do more of? Less of? This is the 80/20 rule in action. 20% of your: • Habits • Beliefs • Friends • Actions Are leading to 80% of both your positive *and* negative results. Now you should have 2 lists: • Things to *double down* on that are bringing you the positive results • Things to *stop doing entirely* that are bringing you the negative results Put those lists somewhere you can see them every morning (for me, that's on my bathroom mirror). Now, it's time to think about the future: --- 5. What am I thinking about for the month ahead? This is a quick list of things you're: • Excited about • Thinking about • Uncertain about This turns into a letter to your future self you can read at the end of the month. --- And just like that, the review is complete! The beauty of this process is you can constantly capture these things throughout the month. • Wins & milestones • Realizations & decisions • Things going well & things to improve Then, at the end of the year, you collect these monthly reviews and distill the entire year.
